Do not plan to visit this place. Rather plan for a family day out or picnic and pick this spot. This place is beautiful during fall. The view of the castle and river is very good. If you just want to visit this place, 1 hour stop is sufficient.
Great park! The castle is very fun to see in person. I highly recommend taking the tour. The actual castle is only open from Memorial Day to the Sunday before Labor Day. The tour guides throughout the castle are great and very knowledgeable. There are several picnic areas and walking trails. Lots of fun!
Great stop for historic reasons. It's a beautiful park, amazing castle, and a must see for CT residents. My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's almost always under construction, so getting a tour inside is a hit or miss prospect at best. The ferry ride over is part of the magic, so make sure to catch that route if you're looking to visit.
One of Connecticut's most enchanting state parks for sure! This historic estate nestled into the valley of the Connecticut River offers some of the most beautiful views and an abundance of trails – definitely a whole day's adventure at least, or something new to explore every time. Incredible stone masonry architecture adorns the property, not only in the majestic main Castle building, but also in the pavilion, pond area, bridges, and pathways. The trails sprawl throughout the property, offering spectacular views of the Connecticut River, fun boardwalks and covered bridges, and lots of little secrets (letterboxers and geocachers – have fun!). The castle is constantly under renovation (being a historic stone structure), so if you get the rare chance to step inside - definitely do! Heads up: this is a paid park during the summer, but off-season is free. There is a resident theater troupe in the summer on the weekends though, so catch that if you can! Regardless of time of year though, pack a picnic, BRING WATER, and enjoy a day of exploring!
I loved this place. Ample parking. Off-season you can't enter the castle but a great place to spend an afternoon. A great view of the Connecticut river and the accompanying mountain range makes the visit even more beautiful.
